The firewood dilemma: Human health in a broader context of well-being in ChileArtículo de revistaLa mitigación del cambio climático requiere el desarrollo de alternativas a los combustibles fósiles, a la vez que busca formas de aumentar la resiliencia de nuestros sistemas socioecológicos, especialmente aquellos que dependen de los bienes y servicios del ecosistema. La biomasa forestal recibe cada vez más atención como fuente de combustible renovable; Sin embargo, al mismo tiempo, el aumento en el uso de combustibles de madera plantea problemas de salud sobre los efectos adversos de la contaminación y como un posible contribuyente a la deforestación y la degradación de los bosques. Por estas razones, donde las personas usan combustible de madera, las políticas están diseñadas para alejar a las personas del combustible de madera y el uso de biomasa forestal y subir la escala de energía, generalmente hacia los combustibles fósiles. Utilizando un estudio de caso de Chile, donde la contaminación del aire por la combustión de leña residencial se ha convertido en un problema grave, mostramos que si bien dichas políticas pueden reducir la contaminación a corto plazo, es poco probable que mejoren el bienestar humano o la sostenibilidad del uso de los recursos a largo plazo. En lugar de políticas diseñadas para reducir o eliminar el uso de combustible de madera, al examinar los subsistemas interconectados de energía y recursos y el contexto socioeconómico dentro del cual se usa el combustible de madera, argumentamos que una combinación de intervenciones de políticas dirigidas a la adopción de tecnologías de ahorro de energía, mientras se mantiene el combustible de madera como fuente primaria de energía produciría mayores beneficios económicos, sociales y ambientales.
