Consumo de leña y otros biocombustibles sólidos en la Región de La Araucanía: nuevas cifras y tendenciasRevistaEl consumo de leña en la región de La Araucanía es de 2.736.413 m3 sólidos/año y 890.000 m3 sólidos/año de desechos de la industria forestal que se utilizan con fines energéticos. Estas cifras difieren significativamente de estimaciones anteriores, debido a diferencias metodológicas. El 84% de las viviendas de la región de La Araucanía (urbanas y rurales, incluyendo departamentos) consumen leña, a un promedio de 9,2 m3 sólidos/vivienda/año. La importancia relativa de las especies nativas en el abastecimiento de leña ha disminuido desde 1992, como consecuencia de una mayor disponibilidad de madera de eucalipto, aromo y pino insigne. En términos energéticos, el total de las viviendas urbanas y rurales de la región de La Araucanía consumen 9.000 gigawatt-hora al año, de los cuales el 85% proviene de leña, el 8% del gas licuado, el 6% de la electricidad y el 1% de otras fuentes de energía. Cuando se analizan ciudades específicas se observa que el consumo de leña crece a una tasa menor que el número de viviendas, lo que se debe a que en ciudades grandes como Temuco y Padre Las Casas se está produciendo un reemplazo gradual de leña por pellets y otros combustibles, y a una disminución en el volumen de consumo por vivienda. Esta disminución fluctúa entre 1,1% y 1,6% anual, lo que también se ha observado en ciudades como Valdivia como consecuencia de un aumento en la eficiencia de los calefactores a leña, y a cambios demográficos, climáticos y del uso de la vivienda.
